Long-Distance Barber

Dan’s new barber lives 2,000 miles away. His name is Anibal and he and his wife Carolina fled to Brazil from Venezuela a few years ago. Since then, he’s been eking out a living in a tiny barbershop in the city of Manaus, located in the Amazon rainforest.

Of course, Dan can’t go there for his regular haircuts, but twice a year he visits Manaus to encourage the Free Methodist Venezuelan refugees who are planting a church there. Hanibal is happy to give him a haircut as they discuss the ups and downs of ministry. The barber shop does double duty. One evening a week the men of the church meet there for Bible study. On alternate weeks the women use it for their Bible study. A dozen people can squeeze into the 9×9 foot windowless space; the rickety air conditioner coughs out enough coolness to counteract the sauna-like conditions of the rainforest climate.

Hope had the privilege of leading the Ladies’ Bible study while we were there in early March. It was a joy to see women of all ages (from 12 to 60 years old) crammed into the room, hungry to hear God’s word. The study was done in a mixture of Spanish and Portuguese, but it was clear that love was the predominant language – love for God’s word, love for each other, love for the lost.

Praise the Lord for what He is doing in Manaus. Please pray for this church plant. Not only do they meet in the barber shop for small groups, on Sundays they meet for worship in a two-car garage. They need more space!
